It's
time for our yearly warning about Cocoa Mulch.
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Target and
Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called
'Theobromine.'
This mulch, made from cocoa bean shells, contains
potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine
compound similar in effects to caffeine and
theophylline. The mulch smells like chocolate and is very
attractive to
dogs.
Sunbeam
Hi. I'm
a female senior Spaniel mix. I am calm and friendly. I love
attention and I'm great with children and other animals. I'm a
charming girl and I'm a delight to be around. All of the staff
here love me and know to treat me like the queen that I am. My
guardian of 8+ years knows that I'm here at the shelter, but
he doesn't feel like picking me up...do you? Union County

Roy
G. Biv
When he was
initially trapped, this guy was not very friendly. So his ear
was tipped, indicating he was an altered, vaccinated feral
cat. Over the past few months, he has decided people aren't so
bad. Now he loves being held and petted. Roy has a great purr,
although it's more a rattle, but you hear it all the time. He
so deserves to be inside to sleep on a nice warm bed each
night. Colony

Breed Discrimination
The Ohio bill, H.B.
568, to ban all pit bulls in the state, has now been assigned
to a committee. Click on the link below for information about
this bill and where you can contact committee members and
other Ohio representatives to urge them to vote NO to breed
discrimination. There is also now a petition you can sign in
protest of this proposed breed
discrimination. Animal Law

For Bea
by:
Kristin von
Kreisler
A touching and humorous account of the
author's fifteen years with her beagle, Bea, a refugee from an
animal research laboratory.
Harried by recent
upheavals in her life, the last thing Kristin von Kreisler
needed was another dog. But when she came upon Bea, a scrawny
beagle abandoned by the roadside, she couldn't turn away. Bea
became part of her family, and changed it forever.
Disheveled, malnourished, and terrified of human
contact, Bea seemed damaged beyond repair. But, gradually, she
began to trust von Kreisler. After resisting her touch again
and again, the dog one day leaned in and nuzzled her neck.
From that moment, Bea began to give love as well as receive
it. With the typically unforgettable personality of a beagle,
over the next decade and a half she taught von Kreisler the
value of living utterly in the present, of meeting each day
with a good bark, and of moving forward in life without being
dragged down by past grief.
Written with rare
eloquence and down-to-earth wit, this memoir of Bea and von
Kreisler's fifteen-year love story will charm "beaglers" and
touch the heart of anyone who has ever loved a dog.
A special meeting will be held
at 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 17 at the shelter.
A discussion of HSDC's
financial deficit and obtain apporval of the plan to remedy
the situation as required by the Code of Regulations of the
Humane Society of Delaware County.
Whitehall, Ohio is
proposing a ban of all pit bull type dogs (this could affect
boxers, labs, pointers and countless other breeds and mixes)
within the city limits. There is a grandfather clause
(for ONE dog) but it places excessive restrictions on pit bull
type dogs. Additionally there is a 2nd piece of
legislation that will be introduced. It has the
possibility of creating BSL in terms of registration, micro
chipping, muzzling, spay/neutering and specific confinement
requirements of pit bulls. Overall this piece of
legislation is pretty good but we must get them to keep it
breed neutral How you can help? Please plan on attending
the next council meeting. Each person will have two
opportunities to speak for three minutes in opposition to the
proposed ban. This council is really interested in
hearing about alternative solutions to decrease dog
bites. The council is mainly interested in hearing from
Whitehall residents. If you are a Whitehall resident
please plan on attending. If you live in Whitehall and
are willing to speak, please email : Lisa@PittiesPlace.com
