Would you like to write an article for the Newsletter?

The BarkPark newsletter would like to add a guest column each month written by one of our readers.

Everyone has at least one great story about their pet, experiences working/volunteering with animals, your organization or anything related to animals that you would like to share with the readers.  Funny, sad, informational, we want them all.

We also would like to hear from readers on what they would like to see included in the newsletter. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Columbus Firefighter David Santuomo

We were all appalled at the violent act of fireman Santuomo shooting his two dogs so he did not have to pay to board them while on vacation. Then only receiving 90 days in jail that could be served in 10 day stints so not to interrupt his life too much. And now he will keep his job as a firefighter. Is this the man we want to be there for us when our house is on fire?

What can you do?
Email Fire Chief Ned Pettus Jr.

Healthy Hounds

To your pets the 4th of July might seem like more of an alien invasion than a celebration. Explosions and flashing lights that appear out of nowhere can be a terrifying experience. Many animals try to escape their home or yard trying to get away from the noise.
After firework displays shelters nationwide report an increase in lost animals.
Please take the following precautions to ensure the comfort and safety of your animal companion.

  • Do not take your pet to the fireworks display.
  • Keep your pet indoors in a quiet room with covered windows.
  • Turn on the T.V. or music to muffle the sound. If possible stay with them.
  • Never leave animals outside alone, fear can cause them to jump or dig out of a fence. Tethered animals can hang themselves trying to escape.
  • If your pet becomes anxious, try to distract them by playing games or with a favorite toy. Don't reassure them by pampering, this may reinforce the anxiety.
  • Pets that are afraid of storms or lighting will probably be even more distressed with fireworks. Talk to your veterinarian before the 4th about options for calming the pet.
  • Make sure they are wearing an appropriately fitting collar. You should be able to slip no more than two fingers beneath a dog collar and cats should wear a stretch or safety collar. Always have current information on the identification tags.
  • If your pet does escape make sure to check the shelters every day. Immediately post LOST posters. Always keep an up to date photograph of your pet in case you need to make lost posters or identify the animal as yours.

Make independence Day a safe and happy holiday for everyone.

Special Needs

Rudy
aussie
18 month old red merle male Aussie. He is very friendly, loves people (although can be reserved with men at first), good with other dogs and is great with cats. Good on walks, loves to fetch his toys, knows sit, down, stay, speak, is great in the car, housetrained and great loose in the house Rudy is a very quick learner and right after he has accomplished something new, he looks at you like "why didn't you just say you wanted me to do that". If you are looking for a sweet little guy, they just don't come any sweeter than Rudy, you just need to give him a chance to show it.
Rudy has been diagnosed with diabetes insipidus.  While not curable, it is not fatal either.  It is a condition he will have to live with for the rest of his life.  He gets two pills every day.  The fix is that simple.  What is not simple is the fact that this adorable, happy and joyous aussie boy has to take a medicine called desmopressin.  The best price we have so far is about $100 a month.  Rudy, is, however, a very young, beautiful dog who deserves a chance to be adopted and a chance to live a long life with his very own forever home.

Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are like us." Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are not like us."
Animal experimentation rest on a logical contradiction.

Best Friend

Rocket is about 53#, athletic, lean build. He is a cuddler, quietly shadowed his "mom" all throckete time.  Has been crated, but did fine loose in house for last 6 months.  Not a chewer, not a barker, house-broken.  Mellow most of the time, but gets exuberant and is very strong.  Great with kids, but too strong for younger children.  Good with other dogs, but they seem to be jealous of him. Would love to be someone's "one and only" spoiled dog!  Ok with cats.

Healthy Hounds

Vomiting
All of our dogs vomit from time to time. Eating too fast, eating grass, yellow bile from a too empty stomach can all cause an otherwise healthy animal to vomit, but sometimes vomiting can be the result of something more serious. Here are some examples of when to call the vet.

  • If there are worms in the vomit
  • When non food objects such as cloth or plastic are spotted
  • Vomit that is black or looks like coffee grounds, this can be a sign of blood
  • if your pet is a puppy/kitten. Dehydration and low blood sugar can happen rapidly in an infant.
  • When the pet has had pancreatitis in the past or is on medications for an illness.
  • Heavy breathing and panting as if they want to vomit: take the pet to a emergency vet hospital immediately, this can be a sign of deadly bloat.

Call the vet to see if they think the pet should be seen right away is always safest for your pet when in doubt.

Escape Proofing Your Yard

Have an escape artist that will do anything to get out of your fence? Here are a few suggestions to help you keep fido in the yard.

  • First and foremost spay/neuter your pet. Unaltered dogs will do ANYTHING to get out of a yard.
  • Teach them sit/stay and use this command every time you come in and out of a door or gate.
  • Make sure there is nothing in the yard or around the outside of the fence that is stressing the dog.
  • Patrol your fence weekly for signs of gaps, rotted boards or broken gate latches. Remove tables or trash cans along the fenceline so they do not have an easy step to get out.
  • Pour a concrete curb or bury concrete block around the base of the fence.
  • Place two rows of one foot garden fence one foot and two feet out from the fence line. This will keep them from getting a good "take off" to jump the fence.
  • Add a piece of fence to the top of the existing fence and angle it into the yard.
  • Make their yard a playground. Keep it stocked with  favorite toys, purchase an agility tunnel or small plastic kiddie slide. Hide toys/treats for them to find. Fill a plastic baby pool with water or with sand and bury treats and toys in it.
  • And of course, exercise, exercise, exercise. A tired dog is a good dog.

Sassy

Sassy came to CAHS in December 2008 as a member of our Safe Haven program (to help families having domestic issues). Her family was unable to take her back and she is now looking for her new forever home. Sassy is a bit shy. After being here for a couple of months, she will come out for a pet from her cat friends and will sit next to them for some love. We have no doubts that once she gets into a new home, she will come completely out of her shell. Sassy just needs a new home with lots of love. Even at 7 years old, she has lots of years and life in her!! She would probably do best in a quieter home. Meet Sassy in the Lobby.

Cosmo

Cosmo is a very friendly, loving and intelligent 8 month old American Foxhound. He is housebroken, crate training is going well and we have graduated from the beginner obedience course at PetSmart. He plays very well with other dogs, especially larger breeds. He loves the dog park and he would be good with children.
Since Cosmo is a Foxhound, he needs a lot of exercise, which his current home couldn't provide and is the reason why Cosmo is now in rescue A fenced yard is needed and plenty of romps at the dog park.
You can read more about this great dog and see additional pictures on his Dogster Page
